Brent chart: levels that matter historically
Brent's history includes several price zones that traders and analysts still refer to:
- $147.50 is the July 2008 all-time intraday high, reached just before the global financial crisis.
- $100–$125 was the 2011–2014 plateau. Brent averaged more than $108 a year from 2011 to 2013, the highest sustained level on record.
- $27–$30 was the January 2016 low after OPEC chose to defend market share against US shale.
- Below $20 was reached in April 2020, when pandemic lockdowns cut demand. Brent briefly traded near $16.
- Around $139 was the March 2022 spike after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
- $60–$90 is the range that contained most trading from 2023 to 2025.
- $100 and above returned in March 2026 after the Strait of Hormuz was closed. See 2026 oil prices.
Reading the Brent futures chart correctly
The live chart is a continuous series. It switches from one ICE contract to the next as each month expires, on the last business day of the second month before delivery. Around those dates you may see a gap that reflects the price difference between two contracts, not a real move. Analysts who need a clean long-term series often use the Dated Brent spot price published by the EIA instead.
Brent tends to react first to international events, such as OPEC+ meetings, Middle East shipping risk and Chinese data. WTI reacts first to US inventory releases. Comparing the two on the crude oil price chart shows which side of the Atlantic is driving a move.
Brent chart FAQ
What timeframe is best for a Brent chart?
Use daily candles for trend analysis, 1 to 15 minute charts for news-driven trading, and weekly or monthly charts on a log scale to study cycles.
Why does the Brent chart jump at the start of some months?
The continuous chart rolls from the expiring futures contract to the next one. The jump equals the price difference between the two months, which is larger when the curve is in steep backwardation or contango.
Where can I get historical Brent prices?
Our oil price history page lists annual Brent averages from 2000, based on EIA spot data. The monthly view of the chart above shows the full futures history.
