How to read a crude oil price chart
Pick the timeframe for your question
- Intraday (1 to 60 minutes) shows reactions to headlines and data, such as the EIA inventory release at 10:30 a.m. ET on Wednesdays or OPEC+ statements.
- Daily is the standard view for trend and momentum. Each candle covers one trading session.
- Weekly and monthly show the commodity cycle: the 2014–2016 collapse, the 2020 crash and the 2022 spike.
Use a log scale for long histories
A move from $20 to $40 doubles the price, and so does a move from $70 to $140. On a linear axis the second looks seven times larger. Right-click the price axis and choose a logarithmic scale for multi-year charts.
Watch for roll gaps
Live oil charts follow the front-month futures contract. When the quote switches from an expiring month to the next, the price can jump by the difference between the two contracts. In a steep contango or backwardation that difference can be a dollar or more. A gap on roll day is not a market move.
Indicators oil traders use most
- 50-day and 200-day moving averages are used for trend direction. A "golden cross" or "death cross" is widely watched in commodities.
- RSI (14) measures momentum. Readings above 70 or below 30 flag stretched moves, which are common around OPEC+ surprises.
- Volume and open interest confirm whether a breakout has participation. These are available on futures symbols.
- Previous highs and lows, and round numbers, such as $60, $70, $80 and $100. Option strikes cluster at these levels and they often act as support or resistance.
Chart versus fundamentals
Technical levels shape short-term trading, but oil's large moves have been driven by fundamentals. Examples include OPEC's November 2014 decision not to cut, the April 2020 demand collapse and the 2022 sanctions shock. Pair the chart with the weekly inventory data and the scheduled releases listed on our oil price news page. For context going back decades, see crude oil price history.
