Oil Price Per Barrel Today
The live price of a barrel of oil in US dollars for Brent and WTI. Below are calculators that convert the barrel price into price per gallon and per litre, and a guide to how much of the price reaches the gas pump.
How big is a barrel of oil?
The oil barrel is a unit of volume, not a physical container. Oil today moves by pipeline and tanker, not in wooden barrels. The 42-US-gallon standard dates from Pennsylvania in the 1860s, and the industry formalised it in 1872.
*Barrels per metric tonne depends on density: about 7.1 for heavy crude, 7.33 for average crude and 7.6 or more for light crude.

From barrel price to pump price
A useful rule of thumb: every $1 change in the price of a barrel changes the cost of crude in each gallon by about 2.4 US cents ($1 ÷ 42), or about 0.63 cents per litre. Retail prices follow, usually with a lag of one to several weeks, and they tend to rise faster than they fall.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration splits the retail gasoline price into four parts. Crude oil is the largest, typically 50–60% of the pump price. The others are refining costs and margins, distribution and marketing, and federal and state taxes. In Europe, fuel taxes are much higher, so crude makes up a smaller share and price swings at the pump are smaller in percentage terms.
| Price per barrel | Crude cost per US gallon | Crude cost per litre |
|---|---|---|
| $50 | $1.19 | $0.31 |
| $60 | $1.43 | $0.38 |
| $70 | $1.67 | $0.44 |
| $80 | $1.90 | $0.50 |
| $90 | $2.14 | $0.57 |
| $100 | $2.38 | $0.63 |
| $120 | $2.86 | $0.75 |
What one barrel of crude becomes
Refining increases volume: a 42-gallon barrel yields about 45 gallons of products, because the products are less dense than crude. EIA data for a typical US refinery shows roughly:
- about 19–20 gallons of motor gasoline
- about 11–12 gallons of diesel and heating oil (distillates)
- about 4 gallons of jet fuel
- the rest is heavy fuel oil, petroleum coke, asphalt, liquefied gases and petrochemical feedstocks
The difference between the value of these products and the cost of the crude is the refiner's margin, known as the crack spread. When crack spreads are wide, refiners buy more crude, which supports the barrel price.
Which barrel price is "the" oil price?
Headlines quote one of two futures prices: Brent (international) or WTI (US). Physical barrels of other grades trade at a premium or discount to these. Heavy, sour crudes such as Western Canadian Select or Urals usually sell well below Brent. Light, sweet grades such as Nigerian Bonny Light or Abu Dhabi's Murban often sell at or above it.
Oil price per barrel FAQ
How much is a barrel of oil today?
The live quotes at the top of this page show today's price per barrel for Brent and WTI in US dollars. Brent is the international benchmark and usually trades a few dollars above WTI.
How many gallons are in a barrel of oil?
A barrel of oil holds 42 US gallons, which is 158.987 litres. Refining a barrel yields about 45 gallons of products because of processing gain.
How much gasoline comes from one barrel of oil?
A typical US refinery produces about 19 to 20 gallons of gasoline from one 42-gallon barrel of crude, plus about 11 to 12 gallons of diesel and heating oil and about 4 gallons of jet fuel.
Why is oil measured in barrels?
In the early Pennsylvania oil industry of the 1860s, oil was shipped in wooden barrels. The 42-gallon size became the standard measure, and it stayed in use long after barrels stopped being used for transport.
How do I convert the barrel price to price per litre?
Divide the price per barrel by 158.987. At $80 per barrel, crude costs about $0.50 per litre before refining, distribution and taxes.
