Crude Oil Price Per Gallon Today
A barrel holds 42 US gallons, so the crude price per gallon is the barrel price divided by 42. With Brent near $106 and WTI near $92.80 on 13 October 2026, crude cost about $2.52 per gallon (Brent) and $2.21 per gallon (WTI), before refining, distribution and taxes.

The barrel-to-gallon maths
The oil industry's barrel is defined as exactly 42 US gallons (158.987 litres). The rules of thumb follow directly:
- Price per gallon = price per barrel ÷ 42.
- Every $1 change in the barrel price changes the crude cost of a gallon by about 2.4 cents.
- A $10 move in crude, if fully passed through, is worth roughly 24 cents per gallon at the pump.
- The UK imperial gallon is larger (4.546 litres), so there are about 34.97 imperial gallons in a barrel. Divide by 34.97 for a price per imperial gallon.
| Price per barrel | Per US gallon | Per imperial gallon |
|---|---|---|
| $60 | $1.43 | $1.72 |
| $70 | $1.67 | $2.00 |
| $80 | $1.90 | $2.29 |
| $90 | $2.14 | $2.57 |
| $100 | $2.38 | $2.86 |
| $110 | $2.62 | $3.15 |
| $120 | $2.86 | $3.43 |
Calculated: price ÷ 42 (US gallon) and price ÷ 34.97 (imperial gallon).
Crude cost per gallon vs the pump price
The U.S. Energy Information Administration splits the retail price of regular gasoline into four parts: crude oil, refining costs and profits, distribution and marketing, and taxes. Crude is the largest component, usually around half of the price. In May 2026, when Brent spent most of the month above $100, crude made up 52% of an average pump price of $4.48 per gallon.
| Component | 2025 average ($3.10/gal) | May 2026 ($4.48/gal) |
|---|---|---|
| Crude oil | 51.4% | 52% |
| Refining costs and profits | 14.3% | 22% |
| Distribution and marketing | 17.8% | 15% |
| Federal and state taxes | 16.6% | 12% |

Two things stand out. First, taxes are a fixed number of cents, not a percentage: the federal tax is 18.4 cents per gallon and state taxes and fees averaged 33.55 cents as of January 2026, according to the EIA. When prices rise, the tax share falls. Second, refining margins jumped in the 2026 supply shock, from about 14% of the price in 2025 to 22% in May 2026, so the pump price rose faster than crude alone would suggest. For diesel the effect was stronger: in May 2026 crude was only 42% of a $5.60 gallon, and refining 25%.
The latest EIA weekly survey (week of 5 October 2026) put the US average for regular gasoline at $4.354 per gallon and on-highway diesel at $6.199. Pump prices respond to crude with a lag of one to several weeks; our guide on why gas prices lag oil explains the reasons, and gasoline prices vs crude oil covers RBOB futures.
Why one barrel makes more than 42 gallons of fuel
A refinery produces about 45 gallons of products from a 42-gallon barrel, because the products are less dense than the crude. Roughly 19–20 gallons are gasoline, 11–12 gallons diesel and heating oil and about 4 gallons jet fuel. The full breakdown is on oil price per barrel. That is why the crude cost per gallon of gasoline is slightly lower than the simple ÷ 42 result, although refiners price each product separately rather than splitting the cost evenly.
Crude oil price per gallon FAQ
How much is a gallon of crude oil today?
Divide today's barrel price by 42. With Brent near $106 per barrel on 13 October 2026, a US gallon of crude cost about $2.52, and WTI at about $92.80 worked out to roughly $2.21. The live quotes at the top of the page give the current barrel prices.
How many gallons are in a barrel of oil?
An oil barrel is exactly 42 US gallons, or 158.987 litres. In UK imperial gallons it is about 34.97. Refining one barrel produces roughly 45 gallons of products, because refined fuels are lighter and take up more volume than the crude they come from.
How much does a $1 rise in oil add to the price of gasoline?
About 2.4 cents per gallon, because a barrel holds 42 gallons. A $10 rise in crude adds roughly 24 cents per gallon if refiners and retailers pass it on in full. The change usually reaches the pump over one to several weeks, and margins can widen or narrow along the way.
What share of the gasoline price is crude oil?
In the United States crude oil is usually about half of the retail gasoline price. EIA data show crude at 51.4% of the average price in 2025 and 52% in May 2026. The rest is refining, distribution and marketing, and federal and state taxes, which are fixed in cents per gallon.
